Tom Hardy is switching up his comic book allegiances. The 39-year-old actor flip flops from DC Comics to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his next role. The former Bane portrayer will star in an upcoming Spider-Man spinoff.
Hardy is set to play Eddie Brock aka Venom. Topher Grace previously starred as the villain in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 3.
Venom was originally conceived as a supervillain, but has since become more of an antihero. The character is a Symbiote, a sentient alien, with a gooey, almost liquid-like form. As with real-world symbiotes, it requires a host, usually human, to bond with for its survival. After bonding, the Symbiote endows its enhanced powers upon the host. His most notable host was Brock who was a journalist.
The Venom film will be part of Sony’s Marvel universe and it will begin production this fall for an October 5, 2018 release. Ruben Fleischer, best known for directing Zombieland, is final negotiations to helm the movie project.
