Transgender Teen Drama ‘3 Generations’ Finally Arrives In Theaters In May 2017

I first heard about this film, then called About Ray, back in 2015 just as The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne was generating Oscar buzz. It premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival but has sat on the shelves until now. The Weinstein Company is set to release the film on May 5, 2017, under the title 3 Generations. Interestingly, its original title before About Ray was Three Generations.

3 Generations tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. It stars three of the most acclaimed actors of their generations- Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon.

Ray (Fanning) is a teenager who has struggled with the body assigned to him at birth and is determined to start transitioning. His single mother, Maggie (Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding. Linda Emond and True Blood‘s Sam Trammell also star.

The film recently generated headlines due to the fact it received an ‘R rating‘ because of profanity and sexual references. The Weinstein Company, which is distributing the movie, filed an appeal to have the rating downgraded to PG-13, which would allow anyone under the age of 13 to attend the film with an adult. The film studio feels preventing younger age groups from seeing the film would be ‘a travesty.’

3 Generations arrives in select theaters on May 5. Check out the trailer below.
