Looks like Renee Zellweger will have to start eating carbs again. The production company behind the first two “Bridget Jones’s Diary“, is working on bringing the popular character back on the big screen. It’s been seven years since the second film hit theaters. While the first flick was both a commercial and critical success, the sequel was ravaged by the critics but still managed to rake in some serious box office dollars. With that kind of return on investment, I’m surprised a third Bridget Jones film didn’t come sooner.
Not only is reviving the franchise a smart move for the production company, but it benefits both Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant as well. Let’s face it, the two haven’t had a hit in years and could use some cash and more importantly… box office cred. Colin Firth, on the other hand, is on a career high with his recent Oscar Best Actor win. I’m a little surprised, he’d return to the franchise. Then again, Halle Berry went from earning an Oscar to starring in “Catwoman“. LOL. And she hasn’t recovered since.
Though confirmation of the comedy becoming a trilogy only became official recently, Firth who plays Mark Darcy talked about the film to EW.com’s Dave Krager last year.
“I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can’t have children, I think that’s the way it goes on,” Firth told Karger, who was reporting for Access Hollywood. “So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver [Hugh Grant’s character] for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she’s left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?”
Are you excited to see Zellweger back to play the perpetual single neurotic thirtysomething Brit? Given that Renee is a bit older these days, I wonder if she’ll dust off those bunny ears and playboy outfit for another laugh. More importantly, if she gains the weight again, will she be able to lose it as easily. Hopefully, the third film will be a lot better than “Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason“. Man, that movie was utter crap. Post all your thoughts below.
