Bottled water has recently been getting a bad wrap in terms of its effects on the environment especially the single serve containers. If Celebrities are now endorsing tap water surely we’re not far behind in shunning the consumption of bottled water. I myself try not to consume bottled water and have a Brita water filter at home that I use for drinking and cooking. Our tap water here in Vancouver is actually one of the best tasting as far as I’m concerned.
Petitions from coast to coast are being made to ban bottled water because the bottled water industry uses up massive amounts of fossil fuels to manufacture, transport and dispose of bottled water which is doing nothing to help ease climate change.
What once used to be a status symbol is now frowned upon. Drop that bottled water habit and pick up a reusable stainless steel water bottle and a home water filter.

That’s a good thing MikeB at least you are reusing your bottle.

I think I remember reading somewhere that it’s a bad idea to reuse the same plastic bottle as the chemicals in the plastic eventually leech into the water. No idea if it’s true or not.

I have what’s called a Klean Canteen at work – it’s made of stainless steel so it’s eco friendly!

I was watching Oprah today (hey it’s good!) and it was an earth day special. It actually made me really sad. There’s a section in the pacific ocean between Cali and Japan that’s the size of Texas and is 90 feet deep that’s made up of garbage and plastic. Animals are mistaking it for food (with plastics and even lighters showing up in the carcasses of dead animals), animals getting caught in plastic bags, and a turtle dying of deformation because it got caught in a plastic ring as a baby and couldn’t develop into adulthood properly. Even belugas are now getting breast cancer. It’s sad that this is happening, and to think that if we all stopped with the bottled water, we could make a huge impact in saving our world.

No, I meant I use an actual Nylgene reusable water bottle.
not the bad kind either, everyone should have one.
You can find them at MEC.
It’s not often i would actually buy a plastic bottle of water unless I needed to.

Re using “disposable” bottles is a bad idea especially if they have gone through temperature changes, like freezing. They leech out BPA’s which cause all kinds of cancer. (Particularly breast cancer in women)Sheryl Crow attributes her breast cancer to drinking bottles of water that were left in her hot car. Metal or Nalgene bottles (which I believe are nylon) are the best options, or glass. I try not to buy any drinks in plastic containers, especially waters but my weakness is for Vitamin water.

You are all idiots!
Seriously, reading and listening to you guys shows me how stupid people are, when will people stop being sheep and start to think for themselves.
One person says his opinion and suddenly everyone wants to follow and no one wants to think anymore.
STOP TALKING about bottled water, it is THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED.
Start banning soda drinks, energy drink, vitamin water and alcohol, etc.
The amount of bottled water sold is only a fraction of the other beverages sold in plastic bottles, like coke, pepsi, fanta, vitamin water, etc.
Did you know it takes 14 litres of water to produce 600ml bottle of coke and the plastic of coke is normally harder and worse for the environment that most bottled water bottles.
START THINKING! Did you know most diseases today are due to dehydration. We need to drink more water.
Did you know that soda and energy drink are one of the biggest cause of obesity and many other health problems.
One of the best thing that’s happened is to make bottled water, for years while people were getting poisoned with the soda drinks and the environment being affected by the soda drinks, no one has said anything, why all of a sudden you idiots are blaming bottled water when it only contributes such a small amount of the problem you are talking about.
WAKE UP! there are people out there with great marketing power trying to change your thinking, people with other agendas.
AND let’s say there are no bottled water, do you think, the world is going to stop producing plastic bottles, this will never happen. So wouldn’t it be better if they continued to produce a healthier product that can be available anywhere to hydrate us and keep us healthier.
Maybe what all this is about is to keep us fluoridated and docyle or may be its about taxing bottled water, who knows what agendas are behind this, but certainly the amount of bottled water that is produced compared to the rest of the others plastic things is very, very little. Go and pick on the those things.
GO BOTTLED WATER – GO!

Here’s an article from The Huffington Post regarding the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which Jared above was talking about. This is what we’re doing to our planet.

The point is the change has to start somewhere and bottled water is a target for this because to many of us potable drinking water is readily available on tap. Why buy something that you already have for free? We take our tap water for granted.
What’s wrong with your bottled water?

WOW. we have another melt down on the blog. What’s up with all the displays of hatred, lately?
People chill out!. this is a blog, where people is free to express each personal’s points of view.
Readers are responsible to do their own research, to think and submit their feedback.
Since when homorazzi became CNN news? this is just a blog, take it as it is. And Enjoy!
I do understand the point that “Speaking Spirit” is trying to make. However I don’t thinks it’s addressed properly. Insulting other people and calling them names for expressing their personal opinions it’s not a mature way to make a point come across.
I do not agree that “bottled water is the best thing ever happened”… I think WATER is .
I do agree, that plastic bottles are a major problem… however we have to target not only the water companies, but other drink companies too. Why is it alright for Pepsi or Coke to use plastic bottles and not for water? (good point Spirit)
In order to address the main problem (which is plastic waste) we have to cut down the number of plastic bottles we consume.
There are other alternatives for disposable containers available like glass bottles and cans. However reusable products are always best options. (3R’s: Reuse, Reduce and Recycle)
Yes we are very lucky than in Vancouver we have very good water quality. However you guys remember the time we couldn’t drink water from the tap because of residues?
If there is no bottled water … where do you get potable water in case like that?
Banning plastic bottles might seem like a bad idea (for some)….but companies won’t give up on their business. Water wont dissapear from the stores!.
If bottled water is banned because of plastic… new options will come up. Evian and Perrier already have water in a glass bottle. And yes, it is fancy and expensive… but well if people want to pay for water… sure go ahead let them pay for it.
Banning plastic bottled water will send a very positive message, that I am sure will be followed by other companies. If consumers are concerned about the environment so should be the companies who make the products.
The point is that if we want to help the environment we gotta think of many ways to reduce our daily waste.

Wow, so much hatred lol. The reason why bottled water is a main target is because it’s something you can get free out of your tap. We’re not ignorant to think that plastic is only used for the creation of bottled water. It’s just a lot easier to make people aware of the fact that water comes from your tap. Targeting the large pop companies can come after we make the first huge step with smaller things.

you guys are fortunate that you live in a clean non-polluted city with fresh tap water. usually bottled waters are a MUST in polluted cities. los angeles is a prime example. so are middle eastern cities, asian cities, etc….
