Few expected 2010′s “The Expendables” to make a dent at the box office. On paper having a bunch of over-the-hill actors playing with guns doesn’t really ring blockbuster. Apparently, there were millions of people hankering for vintage action movie stars blowing things up. Admittedly, I walked into the screening expecting to be bored out of my mind. Shockingly, I liked it but credit my nostalgia for movies like “Rambo“, “Commando” and “Bloodsport” from my youth as the reason why.
Given that the original film clocked in more than $270,000,000 worldwide, a sequel was bound to come along. Stepping down from directing duties, Slyvester Stallone hands over the job to Simon West whose previous credits include “Con Air”, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “When A Stranger Calls”. “Expendables 2″ brings back the majority of the original cast and brings on veteran action stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris to the mix. Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger who appeared in the original are back but with more substantial roles this time around. Yippie Kay Yay. The sequel also added some young new blood to the mix to appeal to a younger demo. Enter Aussie Liam Hemsworth and Chinese female action star Yu Nan to the mix. Girl power.
The 2:30 long clip is jam-packed with explosion and action sequences, but little to no plot spoilers. I still don’t have a clear idea what the movie is about. The trailer begins with Stallone boasting, “If you thought the first movie kicked some serious ass, you haven’t seen anything yet.” It’s filled with so many explosions and gun fights, it makes a Michael Bay movie look like a Katherine Heigl rom-com. That said, I sorta want to check out the sequel. It’ll make for excellent mid-summer mindless fun. The Jean-Claude Van Damme and Stallone fight looks epic, plus Schwarzenegger returns to delivering cheesy one-liners. That visual of him jumping into a tiny Smart car is worth the admission alone. Check out the clip below.
What do you think? Did you watch the original? Excited at all to see the sequel? Typically, romantic comedies are my go-to flicks, but I’m oddly excited to watch “The Expendables 2″. Hopefully, there will be a couple of gratuitous shirtless scenes of Liam Hemsworth and Jason Statham. RAWR.
