The 69-year-old entertainer will work alongside Paul Rudnick to develop a musical adaptation of the hit movie, The Devil Wears Prada, which starred Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep. Both Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the 2006 film will serve as inspiration.
“Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting,” John says in a release. “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
This isn’t the first time John has dabbled on Broadway. He worked on The Lion King stage adaptation and Aida. The latter earned him a Tony Award back in 2000.
“To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story. We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could only think of two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick.” – Producers Kevin McCollum and Fox Stage Productions’ Bob Cohen
No timeline has been announced on when we can expect the musical to arrive on Broadway. Fingers crossed that production doesn’t move at a glacial pace. We all know Miranda Priestly isn’t a fan of that.
