If you had any doubts about Jeremy Renner taking over the reins of the Jason Bourne films, they’ll be quickly erased after checking out the newly-released trailer. I, like many of you, felt Matt Damon was synonymous with the action franchise and even the thought of replacing him was sacrilegious. Thankfully, the producers decided to give Renner a different identity. Don’t fret, Renner’s character still has that same steely cool kick-ass attitude of Bourne. At least it seems that way from the trailer.

Even though Tony Gilroy takes over directing duties over Paul Greengrass, who did Supremacy and Ultimatum, the “The Bourne Legacy” seems to have the same edge-of-your-seat type energy as its predecessor. Also attributing to the similar feel are the return of Albert Finney, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn and Joan Allen reprising their earlier roles. Adding some new blood to the mix are Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Rachel Weisz. Check out the official synopsis below.

Official Synopsis

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy.  The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

I really have high hopes with this film. Moving on with the franchise without Damon is definitely a risky move. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that “The Bourne Legacy” doesn’t fall in the same category as “U.S. Marshalls”. That film was the sequel for the “The Fugitive” but followed Tommy Lee Jones’ popular character from the original film instead of Harrison Ford. Watch the trailer below and see if Legacy will avoid Marshall’s fate.
