This long weekend, it appears that The American is going to trump Machete in the box office. It terms of star power, it was George Clooney in The American versus the Machete star studded cast which included Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson and Steven Seagal. The early estimates are that The American will garner just under $13 million for the Friday through Sunday Gross (which would be a total of $16.1 million since it opened on Wednesday) and by tomorrow it should reach $16 million for the whole long weekend – $20 million altogether!

The American takes away Takers which was one of the top last week, and pushes them into second place with about $11.5 million and around $14 for the whole long weekend. Machete which is also in it’s opening weekend with The American slashed it’s way to third place, just a slice under Takers with $11.3 million and about a $14 million total as well. In the last weekend before back to school we have The Last Exorcism in fourth at $7.5 million with a total of $9 million for the whole weekend. Going the Distance went far from number one at $6.8 million for the weekend.
