During last night’s episode of The Amazing Race, host Phil Keoghan delivered some exciting news to Canadian viewers – that Canada would be getting its own version of The Amazing Race on CTV in 2013! The biggest difference between the US version and the Canadian version is that the Canadian version will only be within the borders of Canada – so you won’t need a passport. Other countries outside the US that have their own version include Asia, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Israel, Latin America, Norway, Philippines, Ukraine and Vietnam. The following is CTV’s description of the series:
“THE AMAZING RACE CANADA will provide a uniquely Canadian take on the original series, with competitors discovering the world within the borders of Canada. Though the series’ specific destinations won’t be revealed until it airs, Canada offers divergent topography and disparate locales that are bound to add to the excitement and complexity of the show and its challenges, from Vancouver Island’s tropical rainforest, Alberta’s parched Badlands, the peaks of the Rockies, and the barren tundra of the Great White North, to the Boreal forests of Ontario and Quebec, the sea-faring ports of the Maritimes, the fjords of Newfoundland, and the teeming metropolises and undiscovered towns in between.”
At first I thought the idea of The Amazing Race taking place only within Canada was really lame, but after giving it some thought, we are the second largest country in the world and there is a lot that can be discovered within this vast and complex landscape.
“The Amazing Race Canada is a big show for a big network,” said Phil King, President, CTV Programming and Sports in a press release. “Canadians deserve their own summer version, distinct from what is seen in fall and winter. With the incredible diversity, scope, beauty, and sheer land mass that Canada has to offer, The Amazing Race Canada will explore the world within Canada. It’s a perfect extension to an incredible brand, and a huge opportunity for racers, viewers, and advertisers.”
Added van Munster, “Canadians have embraced the franchise for over a decade, and also
have been wildly enthusiastic about having a version produced in Canada. With the world’s second largest country as its backdrop, The Amazing Race Canada will offer a unique glimpse of the broad and diverse Canadian landscape and culture, while maintaining all of the excitement, spontaneity and challenge inherent in ‘The Race.’”
Insight Productions will be producing the series. This is the same company that is also doing Big Brother Canada. So far, very few other details have been released. The host, prize, audition dates, shooting dates, and number of teams competing have yet to be announced. My guess is that the prize will be $100,000, just as it is for Big Brother Canada.

Lame. “Why go around the world and experience all different cultures when you could go to world famous Unity, Saskatchewan and hunt gophers?????”. Lame

This is so dorky. I was so excited about a Canadian version until I saw that it was confined to our borders. Why bother?

Would be pretty sweet if the grand prize was cash and a spot on the next filming of the US version, being “the canadians” competing with the rest.

Being limited to your own country is lame. I think they did that with a season of the U.S. version. It was like a family team edition or something. I got bored because it was too familiar. Part of the appeal of the race is seeing the teams out of their element and in exotic locations.

I still want to audition. It’s too bad it’s confined to the canadian borders but I guess that it’s better then nothing. Besides, I think Rick’s got a nice idea. The winners could compete in the american version!

I was so excited when I read the article about this the other day… then found out it’s within Canada… lamest thing ever. The whole point is to be thrown into different cultures and dealing with unfamiliar environments, languages, activities, etc.
Blah.

I think that its a great start. We need to embrace the challenge and go for. The people who think its lame no need to apply

While I’d love to see Canadians race around the world, I’m totally aware that would require a budget far beyond CTV’s bank account. TAR is a very labour intensive show to produce. Then there’s the travel costs of cast and crew. Add to that the money paid to locals for security (that you never see), people to work the “contests”, permits and, in a lot of countries, bribes to smooth things out. Research the advertising revenue for U.S. networks vs. CTV. That will reveal why CTV is only doing a domestic version.
