When I was a little boy, I had the most fun playing my female cousin’s Barbie’s. And to think, no one saw the signs that I was gay then? I even asked for a Baywatch Barbie for Christmas one year which came with a dolphin toy as well. The funny part is, I got it! The fad soon passed but I still look back at that and think it’s absolutely hilarious. Imagine if that would have been the start to an adult Barbie collection? But, for those of you who are collectors of the Mattel toy, there is a new doll on the market that is causing quite the controversy.
It’s called the tokidoki Barbie and she features some pretty serious visible ink on her shoulders and chest. Pretty badass if you ask me but some parents aren’t having it. They are suggesting that this may cause children to want tattoos at a young age. However, Mattel is insisting that this edition of doll is meant for adult Barbie collectors only. Here is what a few parents from Virgina are saying:
“If I give it to [my daughter] she will think [tattoos are] okay. She may want to go get some.” – Bill Smith
“[It's] teaching kids to want tattoos before they are old enough to dress like that.” – Kevin Buckner

The ultimate decision however lies in the parent am I right? Just because Barbie has tattoos doesn’t mean that they are going to want them. Some children may wonder why their doll has so many drawings on it. But again, for a child to have this doll, the parents have to buy it for them first. So, don’t buy it, don’t start the conversation. If I collected Barbies, I would definitely want to add this doll to my collection. What do you think of Mattel’s new Barbie? Sound off below.

Well, since I’ve already ordered two of them, it’s a pretty safe bet that I like the tokidoki Barbie. lol
As for uptight parents, if you don’t want your daughter/son playing with a tatted Barbie, then (as the author said) just don’t buy them one. Also, shut the hell up + let us adult collectors with a sense of fun enjoy it.

I don’t think it is as simple as “do not let your child buy one” or “don’t have the conversation.” There are a significant amount of cultural and media figures that openly support or brand themselves in tattoos. Children are going to be able to see those people, especially in the media run society we live in now. If parents are worried about their children getting tattoos then they should talk to them about what they feel is appropriate regarding tattoos opposed to trying to avoid it (because that will fail). This is also applicable to all the other Barbie’s in terms of appropriateness of wardrobe, hair style, piercings, etc. If anything it is helping children understand diversity in the world and while I’m sure some children will relate to a tattooed Barbie, many others will not and likely go for one of the other 1000′s of options they can choose from.

The thing about that mother’s saying is that Barbie is a grown woman, with boobs and high heel shoes… so her little daughter shouldn’t think it’s okay to get a tattoo as a child, since Barbie is clearly not one.
By the way, I’m also a Barbie collector and sure as hell I’ll have one of those!
