Beyonce made her first appearance at the Super Bowl back in 2004. Then, she sang the national anthem before the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers at Super Bowl XXXVIII. Nine years later, the 31-year-old singer will return to the annual sporting event, but this time she’s the headliner. Talk about an upgrade. I wonder if the time commitment needed to prep for the halftime show is the reason why she dropped out of the A Star Is Born remake.
An anonymous source reported to the Associated Press early Tuesday morning that Beyonce had been tapped to perform on the halftime show at Super Bowl XLVII. Bey confirmed the rumors later that day by revealing the above picture with the 2013 Super Bowl date on her face via her website with the caption, “Countdown to Touchdown“. Super Bowl XLVII will be held on February 3, 2013 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. It’ll be the first time the city has hosted the sporting event since 2002.
Since Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction (coincidentally in 2004 when Bey sang the anthem), only the Black Eyed Peas in 2011 have been under the age of 40. After nipplegate, geriatric acts like The Who, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna have dominated the halftime show. Speaking of Madge, her performance garnered a record-breaking 114 million viewers. I wonder if B will be able to top that. I guess it all depends how close the game is and who’s competing.
With the “Irreplaceable” singer on board, question is who’ll join her. Will she invite Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams to perform a number for a Destiny’s Child reunion? Or will she bring in her hubby Jay-Z to join in on the fun. Perhaps, she’ll nix all other performers and make it all about her. What do you think she’ll do and what songs will she perform. Sound off below.
