Go Jaguar! After Stephanie Rice, a three time Olympic Gold Champion swimmer, got roweled up over a rugby match in South Africa, she tweeted “Suck On That Faggots!” to the opposing team, South Africa (Wallabies defeating the Springboks). Now, in addition to pissing off her fans, she’s disappointed her biggest sponsor, Jaguar. So, they pulled all of their ads with her and are taking back their Jaguar XF car from her. Good kitty!
Jaguar Australia’s marketing and public affairs manager, Mark Eedle stated:
“We made a decision yesterday, and we’ve terminated the agreement with her…We will be taking the car that she’s been using back.”
After she had deleted the insensitive and derogatory comment, she posted the following apology on her blog:
“I made a comment on Twitter on Saturday night in the excitement of the moment. I did not mean to cause offence and I apologise.”
Although the 22 year old currently holds the world record in the 400 m women’s individual medley, it looks like this swimmer will be drowning down under from this big mistake for some time.

Totally agree with Tommy. And good for Jaguar for being responsible, progressive, and timely in dealing with this ignorant woman.
I do, however, hope she learned something from this experience.

Haha, obviously Jag knows the position the pink dollar plays in recession-era luxury. And it’s top. Suck on that Steph!

How do you tweet something like that? The time it takes to think what you’re going to write, type it up and send it and nothing ever runs through your head saying “maybe this isn’t right?”… nuts. good on jaguar. i’ll make sure when i win my millions that at least one of em’ is a jag ;)

I disagree, I believe it was an incredible over reaction, and it disappoints me a little to think that so many people are upset and attack her personally for a comment made through excitement. And I find it weird that the word ‘faggot’ causes such an uproar but not ‘downy’ or ‘retard’. But unfortunately that’s the way it is. I suppose she now pays for something so tiny, perhaps we should turn our attention to real problems, and not harmless, excitement over her country winning a rugby match.

Did I just attend a night called “Fag Fridays” at Oasis? Did I hear a young twink shouting down the street at his friend a few metres ahead “hey faggot!”? Have I heard creative variations of the word faggott casually added to conversations among gay men, often? Yep.
Personally I find the arguement that when the gay community uses the word “faggot” it is a way of fighting back against prejudice and that it is empowering to be bunk. Too many gays are purposefully saying the exact same things this athlete tweeted. I’d like to see that change. Maybe, it’s actions like this by Jaguar that will help gay men realise its hypocritical to be saying the exact same things. In that case it’s a bit ridiculous that the lesson is being taught by a homophobic lady rather than gay men who collectively demand equality and fairness for everyone.

Reddis: maybe it doesn’t make total sense but there IS a difference between Kanye using the N word in a song and some random white guy from alabama shouting it at a group of kids walking past him for example. “taking back” words may seem counterproductive but it’s one way people handle discrimination- we each have our own. Using those words to express HATE is not okay. That’s what my fictitious alabama man did, and that’s what Stephanie did.

Ok thanks Adam. Yes, I’ve had this explanation given to me a few times. I’m starting to feel a bit thick skulled, but I just don’t buy it.
