We’ve finally arrived to the release date of one of the most anticipated movies of the year. It is the sequel to the mega blockbuster Star Trek a few ago, this one titled Star Trek: Into Darkness.
I didn’t know much of this movie before I stepped into the theater and I think that was the point. That seems to be happening a lot with the big blockbusters this year. Iron Man 3 was vague, as is Man of Steel, Star Trek was no different. The only thing you knew from the previews is that this movie looked epic, and it absolutely was.
We open the story on the planet Nibiru as James R Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) attempt to save a planet from destruction. When Spock’s life is in danger, Kirk breaks the Prim Directive of not being seen by the inhabitants of the planet to save him. Naturally this leads to an argument between the two with Kirk getting frustrated over Spock’s inability to feel or understand why he saved his friends life. This seems to be one of the main themes in this movie with Spock, especially when it comes to his relationship with Uhura (Zoe Saldana). Yes they are still dating, and yes they have problems like most couples. After Nibiru events start to un fold that leads to a major attack on the Federation by a mysterious super human former Commander John Harrison. But how is this guy so powerful and why is he attacking the Federation?
Anything more than this will lead me into spoiler territory and I promised I wouldn’t do that. So let’s talk about the movie as a whole. It’s two hours of non stop action. I felt really bad for the Enterprise because every time they fixed her she got banged up again, every time they can take a moment to breathe something goes wrong. By the end of it I felt like the ship was so over it. It makes for great action though that’s for sure.
The actor chosen for these roles are perfect once again. I really like Chris Pine for a number of reason. First of all yes he is gorgeous but he is also incredible in his role. Zachary Quinto is his perfect foil, in fact these guys’ real relationship is probably a lot like their movie relationship. The star for me though is Zoe Saldana, she is FLAWLESS as Uhura once again. I love her and she really gets to spread her wings this time round. Benedict Cumberbatch as the rogue Commander is also fantastic, and his character development is awesome. We’ve got a new crew member in this movie in Dr Carol Marcus played by the gorgeous Alice Eve, honestly she’s SO pretty. Karl Urban and Simon Pegg reprise their roles and McKoy and Scotty respectively, and once again Simon Pegg steals every scene he’s in.
While this movie was a great sequel, I didn’t feel the same exhilaration I did from the first film. I don’t know why that was, maybe because the first one was my first real foray into trekkie-dom. However this is definitely one to check out, and do it as soon as you can.
Movie Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
