Even before Whitney Houston’s passing, I was already looking forward to her return to the silver screen. Given that this is her last performance, the anticipation is even greater. Not only does Whitney star in the flick, but she also co-produced and was very instrumental in making the film come to fruition.
“Sparkle“, inspired by The Supremes, is a remake of the 1976 film which starred Irene Cara. “American Idol” Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks takes over the titular role in the new version. The film revolves around three sisters who form a girl group during the 1960s Motown era. Houston plays a single mom to the three girls played by Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and the aforementioned Sparks who makes her feature film acting debut. Could Sparks follow Jennifer Hudson’s path to Oscar glory? We’ll find out soon enough.
“It was definitely her baby,” Sparks told EW.com “You could see the pride on her face when we wrapped. She was so excited that this was finally happening. Even before she passed I wanted to be able to represent this movie in a way that would honor her and respect her, because she worked so hard on it.”
In addition to getting our first look at the film, we also have our first listen to the music. Watching Whitney belt out a track in the movie trailer is bittersweet. While it’s a joy to hear her beautiful voice, you can’t help but be sad knowing that it’s one of her last vocal performances. Joining the ladies in the film are Derek Luke and Cee Lo Green.
