9-11-texts

On September 11th, 2001, a total of 2976 people (excluding hijackers) were killed during the 9/11 attacks. Now, a company called WikiLeaks is releasing on their site about half a million text messages that were intercepted or retrieved from the morning of the attacks. The messages are a glimpse into the panic, fear, and desperation that people felt over the course of a few hours. People like me, safe and sound, couldn’t even imagine what kind of thoughts would be going through the minds of those individuals at ground zero, where it all took place. Well, now we can get a better idea.

Now, of course, the release of something like of course will bring about polarizing opinions on whether or not it should be brought out into the open, years and years later.

What is your opinion on this? Should the discussion about 9/11 be put to rest? Should these texts that were intended on being read only by those they were directed to remain that way, and not be thrown out into the open?

This is what the Wikileaks spokesman, Daniel Schmitt said about the release:

“I fully understand that this is very emotional material, but this does not mean that this is not part of our historic record. And from the publishing perspective of the Wikileaks perspective, that is what counts. We are helping to maintain an uncensorable part of this day’s record in more detail than has ever been provided before.”

Well, if you are curious as to what people were thinking and what they were texting to loved ones, read on for a handful of these texts.

“Please call my work as soon as you get in the office. Need to know you’re safe.”

“Wondering where you are. Are you okay. Give me a call back asap. I just need to know these things. Even if it’s collect. Call me. Darryl”
