Sam Smith Debuts ‘Burning,’ His Favorite Track Off His New Album

Sam Smith and his team are working overtime to make sure everyone knows his sophomore album, The Thrill Of It All, arrives next week on November 3. This week alone, a trailer for his sophomore album dropped, as did a trailer for his iTunes documentary, On the Record: Sam Smith – The Thrill of It All, about the making his new LP. Now comes another taste off his upcoming release. Not just any, but his favorite cut.

“The song is actually my favorite song from the album and it’s the most personal song I’ve ever written in my life,” he told BBC Radio. “I was going through a really tough time last year. I live in London, and I went through a breakup. And I dealt with the breakup in a bad way, and I was just going out way too much.”

Burning” is a beautiful piano-based ballad which highlights Smith’s heavenly voice. As you’d expect, it’s melancholy in its tone and lyrics. “I’ve been burning/ Yes, I’ve been burning/ Such a burden,” he sings. “This flame on my chest/ No insurance to pay for the damage/ Yeah, I’ve been burning up since you left.”
