As part of his 21st Century Fox deal, Murphy created American Crime Story, American Horror Story, Feud and the upcoming Pose for FX and 9-1-1 for FOX. However, that deal expires this summer. Instead of resigning, Murphy has jumped ship over to Netflix for a 5-year deal reportedly worth $300 million. He already has two shows in the pipeline- Ratched and The Politician. Both of which were previously announced.
“The history of this moment is not lost on me,” Ryan said in a statement. “I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 dollars in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me. I am awash in genuine appreciation for Ted Sarandos, Reed Hastings and Cindy Holland at Netflix for believing in me and the future of my company which will continue to champion women, minorities and LGBTQ heroes and heroines, and I am honored and grateful to continue my partnership with my friends and peers at Fox on our existing shows.”
Murphy is just the latest major coup by Netflix. The streaming service previously lured Shonda Rhimes from ABC for an undisclosed multi-year deal as well.
I can’t wait to see what Murphy produces for Netflix. One thing is for sure. Sarah Paulson need not worry about ever being unemployed. Ryan is certainly loyal to his muse and other actors he loves.
