Yesterday, Roger Federer finally did it. After the longest played final in Wimbledon history, Federer beat Roddick in an epic battle to win his 15th Grand Slam Title. He now stands alone atop of all the tennis greats with the most Grand Slam titles. Past champions such as Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver and Pete Sampras who held this record until yesterday were on Centre Court to witness history being made. Just a few months ago, critics were beginning to write off Federer and claiming he had passed his peak. By achieving a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open last month and now passing Sampras’ record there is no dispute as to who is the “Greatest Tennis Player” ever. No one has truly dominated tennis for the past few years as Federer has. He truly deserves this title and all future accolades he receives.

The ATP Tour Official Website has created a video to commemorate this great achievement. They’ve also created a tribute on the site documenting Roger’s road to fifteen.

Here are some of the remarkable records Roger Federer holds.

  • Most career Grand Slam Singles Title – 15 (Previous holder: Pete Sampras with 14 titles)
  • Most consecutive weeks at No. 1 – 237 (Previous holder: Jimmy Connors with 160 weeks)
  • Most prize money in a single calender year – $10,130,620

Now that Wimbledon is over, I can finally get my sleeping pattern back into normal. For the past two weeks I’ve been sleeping at 2am (my normal bedtime) and waking up at 5am or 6am to watch some of the matches being played live. Gotta love my commitment, right?
