Back in 2012, Elton John revealed Justin Timberlake was his number one choice to play him in a biopic. Then a year later, the “Tiny Dancer” hitmaker changed his mind. Tom Hardy had signed on to play a young Elton in Rocketman which was to be directed by Michael Gracey. Five years later, we have yet another leading man.
Deadline reports “Paramount Pictures is closing a deal to finance and distribute worldwide Rocketman, a picture package that has Dexter Fletcher directing Taron Egerton in the role of Elton John, through the course of a most iconic life. The film covers the singer/pianist’s growth from a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to a global superstar, through his influential and enduring musical partnership with his songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin. It is an unvarnished rock ‘n’ roll biopic with John’s life stripped back of the glitter.”
Rocketman is a reunion of sorts for Egerton. The 28-year-old Welsh actor previously worked with Fletcher and John in Eddie the Eagle and Kingsman: The Golden Circle respectively. In addition to acting in the film, Taron will also re-record the rock legend’s hits for the movie’s soundtrack. Apparently, “everyone who has heard him has been gobsmacked by the quality of his voice,” according to the publication.
What do you think of this casting? Is Egerton a better choice to play Elton John than Timberlake or Hardy? Sound off below.
