Arguably one of the best singles to be released this fall, Rihanna’s “We Found Love” has some great lyrics and a killer beat to compliment them. Now, her new video for the song is just the icing on the cake. In the video, we see the story of Rihanna finding “love in a hopeless place,” as the lyrics suggest. As the video begins, we see what appears to be the end of a relationship, as a women with an Glasgow accent narrates: “It’s like you’re screaming but no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important that without them you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, like nothing can save you. Then when it’s over and its gone, you almost wish you could have all that bad stuff back so you could have the good.” Then the music starts.

Rihanna and a guy (who bares a striking resemblance to Chris Brown), are inseparable as they fall further in love in the video. When the first build up in the song takes place, we’re taken through a “Requiem For A Dream-like” drug trip montage as Rihanna and her man get high as a kite. The two find themselves getting into trouble around town, gettin’ down & diry, tattooing each other, and doing all of the drugs. With flashes of psychedelic colors, dilated pupils, and their world spinning out of control, it’s “what goes up, must come down” on their drug trip of love.

There are some scenes where Rihanna and the Chris Brown look-a-like are fighting in a car, which makes me feel like she’s channelling some of her own experiences in this video. The video is amazing and may be one of my favorite Rihanna videos to date. She wasn’t afraid to go dark in this video and tell a not so pretty love story and to me it pays off. The video is very good.
