Rihanna has just released her music video for her latest single, “Diamonds” and the buzz before it was released suggested that it was a post-apocalyptic theme, but that is not the case. In fact, I’m not sure what the theme is.

The video features countless closeups of Rihanna, who gets emotional as she sings the lyrics. Other intermittent clips include a burning rose, a pile of diamonds, a closeup of Rihanna’s tattooed fingers on some guys tattood arm, two affectionate horses, and more. Towards the end, we see clips of what could be considered apocalyptic but if it is, it’s not clear. Lastly, we see Rihanna floating face up in a body of water as the camera slowly pulls up and away.

There are some very beautiful and interesting shots in this Anthony Mandler-directed video, but all together there’s no real common thread other than maybe sadness?
