I wonder if Reese Witherspoon tried to channel her inner Elle Woods during her run-in with the law this weekend in Atlanta. The Legally Blonde star was arrested for disorderly conduct according to Variety.com.
Witherspoon was with her power agent husband Jim Toth when police pulled them over under the suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Reportedly, he was swerving into the wrong lane. Guess he couldn’t
drive Walk The Line. Sorry. I just had to reference Reese’s Oscar winning role in the Johnny Cash biopic. The website says he blew a .139 on a Breathalyzer test.
Once Toth was placed under arrest, the 37-year-old actress exited the vehicle and was instructed to get back in the car. According to the report, she “stated that she was a ‘US citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.’” She was then handcuffed after her disobedience.
The arresting officer’s report goes on to reveal that, “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, “Do you know my name?” I answered, “No, I don’t need to know your name.” I then added, “right now.” Mrs. Witherspoon stated, “You’re about to find out who I am.” It goes on to disclose, “Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, ‘You are going to be on national news.’ I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine.” Someone was playing the celeb card, weren’t they? Oh Reese. Check out her mugshot below.
Clearly, Reese is embarrassed by the situation. Unlike Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton who try to work their mugshot photo op, Witherspoon just hangs her head in shame. That or she’s passed out from drinking the sauce to much. Allegedly of course ;)
The couple was in Atlanta because Witherspoon is shooting the film, The Good Lie, there with Philippe Falardeau. The two spent only a brief time in jail and were released on bond. A court appearance is scheduled for Monday morning in Atlanta Municipal Court.
UPDATE: Reese has since issued an apology through her publicist. Check it out below.
“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”
Would you have expected Reese to have a run-in with the law? What do you think of her mugshot? What type of punishment, if any, do you think she or her husband will face? Sound off below.
