It’s always a bit of a challenge for movies that are opening on Halloween weekend. Add to that it being game 7 of the World Series on Friday, a Northeastern snow storm and it gets even harder. That being said, since kids won’t be celebrating Halloween until Monday night anyway, it makes sense that they dragged their parents out to see “Puss In Boots” this weekend. The film brought in $34 million this weekend, becoming the record holder for Halloween weekend – previously held by Lionsgate’s “Saw III“, which grossed $33.16 million in 2006.
Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried‘s “In Time” did so-so this weekend, with an opening of $12 million, taking the third place spot. I think if it was any other weekend, the film would have opened with stronger numbers. With that, the film is expected to do much better next weekend when there aren’t so many distractions.
“The Rum Diary“, starring Johnny Depp & Aaron Eckhart was pretty much a flop, opening with a little over $5 million this weekend. It doesn’t surprise me that this film didn’t do much better considering for one thing, I’ve seen little to no promotion for the film. The film is about a journalist (Depp) who takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper and struggles to find balance between island culture and the expatriates that live there. Sounds interesting enough, but I’ll wait until I can rent it from iTunes.
