Who knew an orange jumpsuit and alien head could cause such an uproar? Looks like Target, Walmart and other big outlets now know. These big box stores have received many complaints over an “Illegal Alien” costume being sold on their shelves. The costume depicts a space alien in a prison orange jumpsuit while hold a big “green card”. This depiction has outraged many in the Hispanic community and those concerned over immigrant rights.
Here’s what the official product description says:
“He didn’t just cross a border, he crossed a galaxy! He’s got his green card, but it’s from another planet! Sure to get some laughs, the Illegal Alien Adult Costume includes an orange prison-style jumpsuit with ‘Illegal Alien’ printed on the front, an alien mask and a ‘green card.’”
Okay, I maybe opening up a can of worms here but I don’t find this at all offensive. Am I insensitive to racial issues? I think not. Being an immigrant myself, I do not think the manufacturers or retailers had any malicious intent towards the Hispanic community in making this product available. Speaking of which, I am sure there are a whack of illegal aliens who aren’t of Hispanic descent but why has this caused such a commotion within that community only. If you know, please enlighten me.
Have we gone too far with political correctness? Some can argue Taco Bell’s longstanding ad campaign “Run for the Border” is offensive as well. And don’t even get me started on that chihuahua. Furthermore, doesn’t term “illegal alien” clearly states you’re in the country illegally. I don’t think the Hispanic community owns the market on illegal aliens. Illegal aliens from Earth and the galaxy unite.
If you’re looking to purchase this costume for Halloween, good luck. The aforementioned stores along with Amazon.com, Walgreens and others have pulled them from their stores. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) wrote a letter calling for several big-box retail stores to deport the costume from their shelves.
Here’s a news piece about the controversy. The girl’s reaction wearing the purple top is hilarious- teenage girls crack me up. Its at 1:52 if you want to fast forward.
