I detailed the short list for the Polaris Music Prize for 2009 back in July. Nominees included Patrick Watson, Montreal’s Malajube, and Homorazzi cast favourite Metric.
Well, the ceremony was performed last night and the winner was…. Fucked Up! Oh hell yeah! That’s who I hoped would win. The Chemistry of Common Life was a musical achievement like no other last year. They seriously pushed the envelope in hard core.
Singer Damian Abraham is the front man you love to watch. Animated and intense, the stage is his playground. They’re one example of a band who doesn’t lose their stage energy on their recordings. He’s the nicest guy you’ll ever meet too. When I went to see them earlier this year at the Biltmore, Abraham was sitting at the merch table talking to everyone and anyone who came by.
It was a great night for Canadian music. There have been a lot of bands to gain wide spread popularity in the last few years. Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Feist & all the other members from Broken Social Scene. This win shows that not all the good stuff is indie rock. Canada is home to great punk bands, great pop stars, and some very talented hip hop artists.
Three cheers for Fucked Up! I’m going to go put Black Albino Bones on iTunes right now.
