Suck it Detroit! S-U-C-K I-T!
The Pittsburgh Penguins won the 2009 Stanley Cup on Friday night. I would’ve posted earlier, but I was side-tracked by Portland Pride and faulty work computers.
So, suffice it to say, if you’ve read any of my earlier NHL posts, I’m a Penguin huge fan and have been for about the past 2 decades. All the rebuilding years, and shitty trades finally paid off. Crosby and co. hoisted the cup in front of a disappointed Joe Louis arena on Friday. Quite the reverse from last year, when the Pens had to watch the Red Wings do the same in their own house.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the second, and held off Detroit defensively for most of game. One shot did hit the cross-bar, and Fluery pretty much stood on his head in the last minute of play, but they all came through when it counted.
Reports have come up saying that Gonchar had been playing with a partial MCL tear in his knee due to his collision with Ovechkin in round 2. What a trooper! I’ve had a similar injury, and let me tell you, one wrong turn and you’re collapsing into a heap of pain.
The story everyone’s talking about of course is “Mr. Championship Poison” himself, Marion Hossa. Hossa was a rental player last year for the Penguins, and was a huge help in taking them to the finals. In last year’s off-season Pittsburgh offered Hossa quite a nice package to stay with them, but Hossa chose to sign with Detroit because he felt they had a better shot at winning the cup.
Hossa choked in the series against his old line mates, just like he used to choke when he played for Ottawa. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I hope the Red Wings dump his sorry ass and he’s stuck signing for Phoenix.
As I watched the highlight reals over and over this weekend, I just felt so much joy. It’s funny how much sports can affect you. I have no real personal investment in this team. I enjoy watching them play and it provides me entertainment, but if Pittsburgh had even missed the playoffs, it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal. It’s nice to cheer for a winner though, haha.
So, hockey’s done for another season. Off comes the playoff beard, and I get my nights free again. Can’t wait to watch next season!

wow, in the average year, i am so disconnected from nhl (sports in general) that I do not know when and by whom the stanley cup has been won. Did not think in my gay-debut year I would have first heard about it from my favorite gay site. Again, that is the reason this site rocks – you have so many gay men running it that though I am sure you may have some commonalities that validate stereotypes but there’s enough of you to throw in topics that gay or straight men (and even women) should know, ie. who won the stanley cup.
Thanks again for the update! last time i checked in the nhl loop the finals were still happening so you all saved me from saying “Oh what! Hockey is over for the year!”.
By the way Topher, you are not only very cute but: hockey, music festivals, crystal castles, etc– yum!
