The Barden Bellas hit all the right notes at the box office this weekend. Most were predicting the highly-anticipated sequel would take a number in the $40 million range. Pitch Perfect 2 surpassed industry expectations, taking home a whopping $70.3 million.
It snatched the crown from High School Musical 3 to become the biggest movie musical opening of all time. Even more impressive is the fact Pitch Perfect raked in only $65 million during its entire run. Who run the world? Anna Kendrick and company, that’s who.
Also opening this weekend was Mad Max: Fury Road. Though it had to settle for second place, the post-apocalyptical film debuted to a solid $44.4 million opening. Not bad for a franchise whose last film hit theaters 30 years ago.
Dropping to third after spending a couple of weeks on top was Avengers: Age of Ultron. It added another $38.8 million to its impressive $372 million take so far.
Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara saw their widely-panned comedy, Hot Pursuit slide to the fourth slot with $5.8 million. Rounding out the top was was Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 with another $3.6 million.
