Is Penelope Cruz The Next Bond Girl?

According to a report by Yahoo! Movies UK it certainly a possibility. The publication’s sources reveal that Penelope Cruz has been approached to become James Bond’s latest love interest. If she does sign on board, not only will she become the first Spanish Bond Girl but the oldest one ever. For once, Bond (Daniel Craig) might have an age-appropriate girlfriend. Craig is 45-years-old, while Cruz turns 40 next April.

For those who are stoked by this casting development, don’t get too excited just yet. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson reportedly tried to get Cruz in the past, but were unable to do so due to scheduling conflicts. A lot can change from now until next Summer when James Bond 24 tentatively begins filming. Hopefully, Penelope’s husband Javier Bardem persuades her to jump on board. After all, his stint as Bond’s nemesis in Skyfall earned him multiple critical accolades. If Sam Mendes does indeed return to direct, we should be in store for another Bond masterpiece.

What do you think of Cruz’s potential involvement with the franchise? Do you like it better when relative unknowns are Bond Girls or do you prefer when stunt casting occurs in the case of Halle Berry, Denise Richards and Teri Hatcher? Sound off below.

If it’s true that’d be a huge improvement on the Bond girls of Craig’s tenure; recently they’ve all been half his age and played very little role in the plot nor have any of them been particularly strong characters. Nice to see someone more age appropriate for Craig.
