Before he dazzles on screen as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody this fall, Rami Malek teams up with Charlie Hunnam for Papillon. The film is a remake of the 1973 film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman which was originally based on the autobiographical novel Papillon written by Henri Charrière.
Papillon is an incredible true story about a great escape. The film follows the epic story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who was unjustly convicted of murder and condemned to life in a notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island in French Guiana, South America. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with quirky convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who in exchange for his protection, agrees to finance Papillon’s escape, ultimately resulting in a bond of lasting friendship.
Papillon first premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. It’s set to arrive in theaters on August 24. Check out the trailer below.
