‘Ocean’s 8’ Sets Franchise Record With Stellar Opening Weekend

Anything boys can do, girls can do better apparently 🙂

Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen bowed with $38.1 million, $39.2 million, and $36.1 million back in 2001, 2004, and 2007 respectively. Sandra Bullock and company just bested their male counterparts. Ocean’s 8 came in toward the higher end of industry projections and snatched up $41.5 million in ticket sales. Not adjusting for inflation, that set an Ocean’s franchise opening weekend record.

The all-female heist flick stars Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter as a crew of swindlers pulling off a job at the annual Met Gala in New York City. Steven Soderbergh, who directed the trilogy, handed over the directing reins to Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) but remained on as an executive producer.

With mixed to positive reviews from critics and a solid B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers, it’ll be interesting to see if Ocean’s 8 has legs or simply a one-weekend hit wonder.

Two other newcomers arrived in theaters this week. Toni Collette’s Hereditary earned glowing review from critics but only managed a D+ CinemaScore. It earned $13 million to land at No. 4 while Hotel Artemis debuted with 3 million at No. 8. Check out the rest of the Top 10 below.
