Obi-Wan Kenobi Stand-Alone ‘Star Wars’ Film In The Works

After a decade away, the Star Wars franchise returned in a big way in 2015 with Episode VII – The Force Awakens. To tide fans over until Episode VIII – The Last Jedi arrives this December, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered in theaters last year. The Star Wars renaissance continues with another stand-alone film in the works.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals an Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone movie is being developed by Lucasfilm and Disney. The project is still in the earliest of stages, but word is Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot and The Hours) is in talks to direct. If he signs on, he’ll oversee development and the writing as well.

Kenobi mentored a young Luke Skywalker in the original film and was a friend to Anakin Skywalker before he became Darth Vader. Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor both played the Jedi master with the former earning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.

No release date has been announced, but the studio has a vacant 2020 release date for an untitled anthology film. The untitled Han Solo film, directed by Ron Howard, has a May 25, 2018 release date with Episode IX occupying May 24, 2019.
