ABC Developing New ‘NYPD Blue’ Series

Don’t call it a comeback, reboot or revival. ABC is bringing back one of its biggest dramas but with a twist.

NYPD Blue is returning but as a sequel. The series will center around Andy Spiowicz’s (original star Dennis Franz) son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. Yup, that’s right. Sipowicz is dead in this new version. Don’t hold your breath for a ghostly cameo either. Franz, a three-time Emmy winner for his role, is retired.

Franz told Deadline. “NYPD Blue was a high point in my life and career, and I think of it so fondly. I wish them all well and much success.”

During its run, NYPD Blue aired 261 episodes over 12 seasons. Not only was it a ratings hit, but a critical darling as well. It garnered 84 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning 20 of them including Outstanding Drama Series in 1995. Until Grey’s Anatomy in 2016, NYPD Blue was ABC’s longest-running one-hour drama.
