Nicole Kidman Serves Up Southern Gothic Realness In Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’

Acclaimed writer/director Sofia Coppola delivers a seductive thriller starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. It’s a change of pace from what Coppola usually brings to the table. The aesthetics and the plot aren’t what she typically gravitates to.

The Beguiled is adapted from Thomas Cullinan’s novel, A Painted Devil. Kidman plays a headmistress at The Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies during Civil War-era Virginia. Their sheltered world is disrupted when a wounded Union soldier, played by Farrell, is discovered nearby and taken in. His presence awakens their hearts, causing them to turn on each other, and eventually, on him. I’m scared to learn exactly what they did to him for him to call them “vengeful bitches.”

The Beguiled seduces moviegoers beginning June 23 with an expanded release the following week on June 30. Check out the tense trailer below.
