YOU first aired on Lifetime last fall and was a modest hit. Even though the network renewed the Penn Badgley series, it was announced the series would move to Netflix as an “Netflix Original” title ahead of its sophomore season. And boy did that decision benefit YOU. It’s now a bona fide hit thanks to all the bingewatching.
The streaming service is notorious for not sharing viewership numbers. However, when it does, you just know the numbers are going to be huge. According to the press release, the series will garner more than 40 million views from subscribers within its first four weeks of availability. That’s definitely huge but who knows exactly what those numbers mean.
EW.com reports, “According to a recent letter from Netflix to shareholders, for series, due to their “highly variable length,” the company counts a viewer if they “substantially complete” at least 70 percent of one episode. In the case of YOU, that means Netflix projects 40 million Netflix accounts around the world will watch at least 70 percent of one episode within the series’ first four weeks on the platform.”
Netflix’s claim aside, the show is a smash hit based on social media. It seems like everyone’s talking about the show, myself included. I binge-watched it over the holidays and absolutely loved it, especially Shay Mitchell’s character Peach. Couldn’t get enough of her.
Have you sampled YOU? If not, definitely give it a watch. It takes a couple of episodes to get into it, but when you do. It’s gripping.
