Netflix Picks Up Ryan Murphy’s New Musical Comedy For Two Seasons

It appears Ryan Murphy is feeling nostalgic for his Glee days. The 52-year-old producer is returning to the musical genre for his next series.

Netflix has picked up The Politican, an hour-long musical-comedy series from Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan and Murphy. It marks Murphy’s second deal with the streaming service, following his One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest prequel Ratched.

Deadline reports Tony winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) will star in the series with Oscar winners Barbra Streisand and Gwyneth Paltrow in final negotiations to join the project. Netflix has given The Politician a two-season straight-to-series order. Like he always does, Murphy will direct the pilot episode.

According to Deadline’s source, the project “revolves around the politician aspirations of Platt’s Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbarian, and every season will revolve around a different political race his character is involved in.” Platt will have musical numbers in several episodes of the show. If Streisand and Paltrow join, I fully expect them to belt out tunes as well.

The Politician joins Murphy’s growing television empire which includes 9-1-1, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud and the upcoming Pose and Ratched. Does Murphy’s new offering interest you? Weigh in below.
