In preparation for your holiday gift shopping, you know there aren’t only presents to put under the tree but also stockings to stuff. For me, this is the task I find the most difficult. Growing up, my mom was always in charge of stuffing the stockings that hung from our mantel above the fireplace. Inside, we would find socks, candies, and little trinkets. As the years went on and we got older, the task got harder for her I’m sure. Body washes, colognes and other things began to appear in the stocking.
Nowadays, we live in a society where everyone just usually goes and buys whatever they need and want. This includes regular household items such as body washes and colognes. So I always ponder what to put inside a stocking other than the most lamest, fall back and last resort plan: the gift card. But then it hit me, why not give a subscription to Netflix? Its perfect!
Netflix is a per month subscription to unlimited rental streams of your favorite TV Shows and movies. With a Netflix account, you can have DVD’s sent to you through the mail and then you send them back. Or, you can have them streamed directly to your computer. Better yet, if you have a Wii, Xbox 360 or PS3, you can stream the Netflix content straight onto your TV. This sounds like the ultimate gift for anybody. But… there’s always a kicker right?
Netlfix advertises its low monthly subscription rate of $7.99/month. Sounds fantastic, but what does that include? The lowest rate includes unlimited streaming of your favorite tv shows and movies to your computer or applicable device. What it doesn’t include is having mail-out DVDs sent to you. Because of this, not all DVD selections are available for immediate stream. For an extra $2/month, you can add a DVD program where you are allotted 1 DVD to be mailed out at a time that you can exchange at anytime within the month simply by mailing it back.
Other DVD plans do exist out there as well. For $14.99/month, you can have 2 DVDs out at the same time and for $19.99, 3 DVDs. The selection of the entire library is up for grabs with the $9.99 and up packages. You can chose to pay for 1, 2, 3, 6 or 12 months. The price varies depending on which initial package you sign up for.
Unfortunately, the selection for Canadians is still somewhat limited and doesn’t include many of your favorites or new releases. I am sure that within the next year and the growth in popularity of the site, the selection will grow.
Check out this funny Netflix commercial announcing the streaming through Nintendo Wii.
