Guess that #RenewSense8 campaign wasn’t enough. What a way to kick off Pride Month on such a sour note. No bueno Netflix!!!
What I feared has actually come true. The streaming service has canceled Sense8 after only two seasons. It’s rare for Netflix to axe an original series so early on, but it’s not unprecedented. Especially, if said series costs a pretty penny. Marco Polo and The Get Down both had huge production budgets but couldn’t translate that to viewers. Sadly, the same thing has happened to my beloved sci-fi drama which reportedly cost $9 million an episode to produce.
“After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end,” said Cindy Holland, VP of Netflix original content (via THR). “It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.”
For a while there, a third season pickup looked promising. Deadline reported the streaming service was reassembling the cast after their options had expired due to the lengthy pre-production, marathon filming and meticulous post-production. Keeping a large ensemble cast like Sense8, which counts 15 regulars, including the title eight, is expensive as talent-holding fees add up over time. Guess that all fell through or the viewership just wasn’t there or a combination of both.
