NBC Ditches Plans For ‘Hair Live’ For More Family-Friendly Musicals

Apparently, the dawning of the age of Aquarius isn’t coming after all.

Hair Live! was supposed to be NBC’s next live musical. The peacock network, however, has decided not to move forward. Read the official statement below.

“Live musicals are a part of this network’s DNA and we are committed to continuing that tradition with the right show at the right time, Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment, said in a joint statement. “Since these shows are such enormous undertakings, we need titles that have a wide appeal and we’re in the process of acquiring the rights to a couple of new shows that we’re really excited about.”

Broad-appeal productions” which really means family-friendly programming. To date, the most successful live productions have been The Sound Of Music, The Wiz and Fox’s Grease. The most recent live musical, FOX’s Rent, which dealt with the AIDS epidemic, delivered the lowest ratings for a live musical yet. With the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, drug use and counter-culture being the main themes of Hair, perhaps NBC execs became gun shy after seeing Rent’s number.

Bummed that Hair Live! has been shelved indefinitely? I am. I love certain songs from the musical including “Aquarius,” “Hair” and “Let The Sunshine In.” Weigh in below.
