NBC 2017 Upfronts: Must-See Thursdays Return, ‘This Is Us’ Gets Super Bowl Push, New ‘Law & Order’ Series & More (Updated)

Everything old is new again at NBC this fall. A decade after signing off, Will & Grace returns with 12 brand-new episodes. With the beloved sitcom’s revival, the peacock network is resurrecting its memorable “Must See Television” campaign. The comedy kicks off a strong Thursday night lineup for NBC this fall.

Joining Will & Grace on Thursday nights is this season’s breakout hit, This Is Us, which moves from Tuesdays. The family drama also received the coveted post-Super Bowl slot next year.

Finishing off the night is the latest addition of the Law & Order franchise. Dick Wolf jumps on the true crime bandwagon with Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders. To be fair, Wolf and his crime series have been ripping from the headlines long before this television trend.

The only other new series debuting this fall for NBC is the military drama The Brave starring Anne Heche and Mike Vogel. It gets the cushy post-Voice slot on Mondays. A spot previously held by Blindspot, The Blacklist and Timeless.

New shows being held for midseason include dramas Good Girls starring Retta and Mae Whitman, the Fame-meets-Glee drama Rise from Jason Katims and Reverie starring Sarah Shahi. On the comedy side, the network has A.P. Bio and the Mindy Kaling-created Champions.

Several unscripted series are also in the wings. They are Ellen’s Game of Games from Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Hardwick’s The Awesome Show, smart-kids showcase Genius Junior hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and the crafting-inspired The Handmade Project from Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman.

Check out the descriptions for all of NBC’s new offerings below, along with some trailers. I’ll update this post as the trailers become available.

NBC 2017-2018 New Shows & Trailers

The Brave

This fresh, heart-pounding journey into the complex world of America’s elite undercover military heroes follows D.I.A. Deputy Director Patricia Campbell (Anne Heche) and her team of analysts as they wield the world’s most advanced surveillance technology from headquarters in D.C. All the while, Adam Dalton and his heroic Special Ops squad of highly trained undercover specialists use their unbreakable bond and commitment to freedom to save lives of innocent people and execute missions in some of the most dangerous places in the world.

Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders

Starring the incomparable Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco (“The Sopranos,” “Nurse Jackie”), this new true-crime installment of the powerhouse “Law & Order” franchise delivers a gripping in-depth dramatization of the notorious murder case that changed America forever. When the Menendez brothers were tried on national TV for brutally killing their parents in Beverly Hills, their story became a national obsession. Now, the first edition of this anthology series delves into the players, the crime and the media circus, detailing the day-to-day battles of the trial and unveiling the shocking truth of what really went down when the cameras stopped rolling.

Will & Grace

That’s right, honey! A decade after their unforgettable eight-season run, comedy’s most fabulous foursome is back. Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally reprise their infamous roles as Will, Grace, Jack and Karen in this exclusive 12-episode event. There’s no doubt that with this crew’s indelible bond and all the happenings in today’s rollercoaster world, the banter will be on point. The legendary James Burrows, director of every original Will & Grace episode, returns along with a slew of razor-sharp jabs and dirty martinis. Behold once again, from the minds of Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, TV’s wittiest ensemble ever. Did somebody say encore?

NBC 2018 Mid-Season

From Executive Producers Charlie Grandy (“The Mindy Project,” “Guys with Kids”) and Mindy Kaling (“The Mindy Project”), Vince is living every bachelor’s dream. He owns the fifth largest gym in Brooklyn, dates an endless string of beautiful women and lives with his dumb, lovable brother Matthew. But Vince’s simple life gets complicated fast when his high school fling Priya (Mindy Kaling) unexpectedly drops off their 15-year-old son Michael so he can attend a city school for super-talented kids. How will Vince handle this wildly ambitious and hilariously witty teenager? Well, somehow he’ll have to work it out.

From Jason Katims, writer and executive producer of “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood,” and Jeffrey Seller, producer of the explosive Broadway hit “Hamilton,” comes a heartening new drama about finding inspiration in unexpected places. When dedicated teacher and family man Lou Mazzuchelli (Josh Radnor, “How I Met Your Mother”) sheds his own self-doubt and takes over the school’s lackluster theater department, he galvanizes not only the faculty and students, but the entire working-class town. Inspired by a true story.

Good Girls

When three suburban moms get tired of trying to make ends meet, they decide it’s time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local supermarket at (toy) gunpoint. But when the manager catches a glimpse of one of them and the loot is far more than they expected, it doesn’t take long for the three best friends to realize the perfect getaway will be harder than they think. From Executive Producer Jenna Bans (“Scandal”) comes this comedy-infused drama that mixes a little “Thelma and Louise” with a bit of “Breaking Bad.”

This grounded new thriller follows Mara Kint (Sarah Shahi), a former hostage negotiator and expert on human behavior, who became a college professor after facing an unimaginable personal tragedy. But when she’s brought in to save ordinary people who have lost themselves in a highly advanced virtual-reality program in which you can literally live your dreams, she finds that in saving others, she may actually have discovered a way to save herself. From Mickey Fisher, creator of Extant, and also starring Dennis Haysbert (“24,” “The Unit”).

A.P. Bio

When philosophy scholar Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) loses out on his dream job and goes to work as a high school Advanced Placement Biology teacher, he makes one thing very clear: he will not be teaching biology. Realizing he has a room full of honor roll students at his disposal, Jack uses his flawed logic to misdirect his principal (Patton Oswalt) and recruit the kids to help him mentally break his job-stealing nemesis and win back the position that’s rightfully his. From the sharp-witted minds of former SNL writers Mike O’Brien and Seth Meyers.

A Few Good Men Live

If you can handle the truth, get ready for a groundbreaking LIVE broadcast of Aaron Sorkin’s electrifying original Broadway play that became the legendary Oscar-nominated film starring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. Executive Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron team up with Executive Producer Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network,” “The West Wing”), who will adapt his own work for this unique television production about military lawyers who uncover a conspiracy at the highest level – while defending their clients accused of murder.

Ellen’s Game of Games

The one and only Ellen DeGeneres returns to primetime to host an exciting new game show that’s one big party! Featuring super-sized versions of some of the most beloved games from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” as well as new ones, contestants will have to maneuver massive obstacles while answering trivia questions, all under the pressure of Ellen’s mischievous and hilarious antics. With DeGeneres’ witty and comedic sensibility, plus fun-filled games, each episode will build to one epic game in which one lucky contestant gets the chance to win the grand prize, but everyone will have a blast!

The Handmade Project

From Executive Producer and host Amy Poehler and co-host Nick Offerman comes a lighthearted competition celebrating the creativity and craftiness in all of us. Each week, eight amateur artisans will take on a series of projects they must complete in their own unique way. As the competition escalates, the amateurs will be challenged to master progressively difficult skills, culminating in a final craft-off between the most creative and tenacious contestants. Shot in a serene outdoor setting, this friendly competition will focus on the character and camaraderie of DIY culture – and through it all, Amy and Nick will provide encouragement, guidance and plenty of laughs.
