‘Murphy Brown’ Revival Debuts To So-So Ratings

Probably not the headlines CBS was hoping for. Unfortunately for the eye network, Murphy Brown didn’t generate ratings like other recent sitcom revivals. Apparently, nostalgia only goes so far.

The Candice Bergen comedy returned back to CBS after 20 years. While it gave the network its biggest audience since January, the Season 11 premiere drew 7.4 million total viewers and a 1.1 rating. Good news though, it did retain most of its Mom lead-in.

Elsewhere on the network, both The Big Bang Theory (2.1) and Young Sheldon (1.6) dropped one tenth respectively from their Monday premieres earlier this week. Meanwhile, SWAT returned to a series low of 0.7.

Over at ABC, Grey’s Anatomy fell from its premiere last fall from 2.3 to 1.8. The demo was also lower than the medical drama’s 1.9 average last year. How To Get Away With Murder reached a new low at 0.8.

The Good Place also couldn’t match its previous performance. The NBC comedy dropped to 1.0 from last year’s 1.3. Meanwhile, the 2-hour Law & Order: SVU premiere christened its new time slot with a 1.1, falling from 1.4 last year.

The underwhelming numbers can mostly be attributed to FOX’s first Thursday Night Football broadcast. Not surprisingly, the game dominated the night with 10.08 million viewers and a 3.3 in 18-49 demo.
