Whether we like to admit it or not (for legal reasons), we’ve all downloaded our favorite TV shows through bittorrent. Sometimes we can’t help it because our PVR/DVR decided to go crazy and miss a show or someone in our household “accidently” deleted it after watching it themselves. Regardless of the reason, we’ve all done it. And according to the 2009 statistics compiled by TorrentFreak.com, millions of us are guilty as charged. Let’s hope the network execs don’t make us walk the plank anytime soon. Let’s face it, it’s their own fault for not airing re-runs like they used to.
Not surprisingly, most of the shows in the top 10 are male-skewing since I can’t see Ashley, Brittany or Chloe downloading illegal content. Some of the shows that made the list are “Prison Break”, “24”, and “Lost” to name a few. See what other shows round out the list. I admit, a few of them were a bit of a shocker.
10. True Blood
I’m a little late to arrive on this bandwagon, but Brian and I recently got hooked. During the holidays, I purchased the Season One DVD at Target for an insanely low price of $17.99. The HBO vampire series made big waves during it’s second season, and that also translated to illegal methods as well. Coming in at No. 10, True BLood adds another 1.6 million “fangbangers” to it’s stable.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 12,400,000
9. Grey’s Anatomy
I stopped watching this show when Izzie and George started to hook up a few years ago but it looks like I’m in the minority. A few of my friends have told me that Grey’s has gotten their groove back in the past years. Maybe it’s time to play catch up.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 15,640,000
8. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
One of two cancelled series that made the list. Terminator should’ve worried more about saving viewers rather than saving mankind.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 6,340,000
7. Desperate Housewives
Obviously this one was probably downloaded by a lot of husbands who erased Desperate Housewives from their DVR when they needed room for their Sunday football games. Anything to get out of the doghouse, right? PS. How awesome has this season of Housewives been.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 15,500,000
It maybe called 24 but it’s ranked 6th on the list. Adding a respectable 2.4 million downloads to it’s already robust viewership, Kiefer Sutherland isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. How many global crisis can one man expect to divert?
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 12,620,000
Everyone’s favorite cantankerous M.D. and his staff add another 2.5 million patients to its rounds.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 15,600,000
Shows like Dexter, I totally understand why people download them. Most people don’t have premium cable or don’t have it available in their area. And who wants to wait months later til the show comes out on DVD. I’ve been meaning to start watching this show. Maybe after I catch up on True Blood and Grey’s Anatomy, I’ll add this to my viewing schedule.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 2,300,000
3. Prison Break
Breaking into the top three, Michael Scofield and the chain gang ended their run in high style. I used to love this show during its first season but my interest waned during it’s third season when it took place in a foreign prison. Seriously how many incarcerations and conspiracies can one (SUPERHOT) man handle. Wentworth Miller, when are you going to come out of the closet? The show could’ve definitely benefited for more “OZ” type shower scenes.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 5,300,000
Definitely not getting “Lost” in the shuffle, the penultimate season of the ABC hit show had to settle for runner-up status. The previous year, Jack and Kate held the top spot but lost their hold. Maybe it was their destiny to come in second. Well, according to Locke that is.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 11,050,000
Poor Heroes. Not only has it lost favor with critics but regular viewers as well. Most of the shows on the list had illegal downloads only supplement their numbers. Heroes, is one of two that actually had more pirated bittorrents than actual viewers. NBC, you better stick a fork in it cuz this show is DUNZO.
REGULAR VIEWERS (NIELSEN RATINGS): 5,900,000
Do you download any shows? If so, which ones do you do regularly? Or are you a by-the-books straight-laced kind of person?
