Taking a page out of Emily Thorn’s book from Revenge, Mika is dishing some retaliation of his own in the music video for Popular Song. The 29-year-old openly-gay singer teams up with young Mariah Carey, aka Ariana Grande, to serve up sweet revenge on their school bullies. Here’s Mika’s explanation behind the song and anti-bullying video concept.
“I went to see [“Wicked”], and I thought, ‘Glinda’s actually being mean,'” Mika said of the song in an interview with HuffPost Gay Voices. “So I thought it would be nice to take the song and write my own version of it because I don’t like what she was saying in that part of the show.”
The Chris Marrs Piliero-directed music video is a dark visual feast. It looks like something Tim Burton might’ve created. In fact, it’s Beetlejuice meets Nightmare Before Christmas with a dash of Alice In Wonderland for good measure. Once Mika and Ariana emerge victorious, one of them turns on the other. Turns out, one wasn’t so nice to the other during their childhood. Find out who below.
