Don’t call it a comeback. She’s been here for years. 28 years to be exact. Mariah Carey just dropped her fifteenth studio album, Caution, which her first studio project in four years since Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse back in 2014. And I have to say, it’s her best offering since her 2005 opus The Emancipation of Mimi.
Caution features only ten tracks on the standard edition but every single one is a winner. This is vintage Mimi at her best. She’s silky, unapologetic and sharp. There’s a sense of nostalgia but don’t get it twisted, it doesn’t feel at all outdated. It’s a throwback but with a contemporary touch. In no particular order, here are my favorite cuts.
I have to admit when I first heard “GTFO,” I thought it was a bit desperate on Carey’s part with all the vulgarity. However, the kiss-off anthem has really grown on me big time. I can’t get enough of it.
Speaking of kicking them to the curb, “A No No,” is also one where Carey shines bright. Her use of “irregardless” alone makes this a winner. Also, the way she delivers this line is pretty gnarly too. “Parlez-vous francais, I said no / Let me translate, I said no.”
“Caution” is fantastic and worthy to be the title track. Definitely proceed with caution when dealing with Mimi all you gentlemen callers.
“8th Grade” is another favorite. It kinda reminds me a bit of “We Belong Together.”
Even though Caution leans more to the slow jam side, “Stay Long Love You” picks things up. It’s got a cool laidback uptempo vibe to it.
