Madonna’s ‘Erotica’ Album Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Twenty-five years ago this week, Madonna released her fifth studio album, Erotica. It was the first full album released after her greatest hits compilation, The Immaculate Collection. The sexually-charged LP was simultaneously released with her infamous coffee table book, Sex, which contained explicit photographs featuring the singer and other celebrities.

Madge was no stranger to controversy, but this era proved to be one of the most controversial of her career. She received backlash due to the fearlessness and frankness that she showed when talking about sex, taboos, love and death.

When compared to her previous LPs, Erotica only sold a fraction. It moved 6 million worldwide and just under 2 million in the US. It also became her first studio album not to top the chart since her debut. The album, did however, spawn two Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits.
