Such a good movie! I really didn’t know much about the film going into it, except for the fact that it had something to do with Viagra going into it, and that Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway were the leads. That was enough to make me see it. Remember when they played a dysfunctional couple in Brokeback Mountain together? Well, here’s a little synopsis of their second project together:
Maggie (Hathaway) is an alluring free spirit who won’t let anyone – or anything – tie her down. But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie’s evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love. Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.”
As we start off the film, we learn that Jamie, who is a bit of a player, is struggling to find his passion in life while his douchie younger brother (Josh Gad – who was hilarious) overshadows him with loads of financial success. One of my favorite lines of his was when Jamie showed his sensitive side and his brother asks him, “Were you molested by a care bear?” LOL. Anyway, an opportunity falls on Jamie’s lap to get into pharmaceutical sales. We see him learn the ropes and go through the trials and tribulations of life in sales on the road. He is partially motivated by this jerk of a man that essentially rules the market and has an in with all the key doctors. This makes it difficult for him to get any samples in the hands of the doctors.
After some a bit of work, he convinces a key doctor to let him sit in with patients so he could get a better idea of his needs. That’s where Maggie comes in. She’s getting checked up and getting new meds for her disease. She’s in the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease. As part of her checkup, she has to go topless, where Jamie, the lady’s man, sneaks a peak. After the exam, Maggie sees Jamie in the parking lot with his samples, so she figures out that he’s a sales rep and is livid. Jamie feels bad, especially since he’s really into her and he needs to make it up to her. To further complicate this, Jamie learns that Maggie has history with his rival sales rep.
With what starts out as casual sex between Maggie and Jamie, starts to become more than that as Jamie starts to really get into her. But, because Maggie struggles with her disease, she avoids commitment in relationships because she doesn’t want to get hurt in the end when they break up with her because of what the Parkinson’s will do to her.
A fancy little drug called Viagra falls on Jamie’s lap and it becomes the jackpot for success with the doctors. It wasn’t hard to sell the hard-ons. He does really well with his job, but as things progress, so does Maggie’s Parkinson’s. She struggles to let him help her and it’s truly heartbreaking.
The two have some intense & hot sex scenes and yes, there is a lot of nudity in this from the two stars. I guess you could say that the film is a meatier version of a romantic comedy. It had more substance and there are some really touching moments between the two stars. Their love story is amazing.
Also amazing in the film was the music. Some of the great music that was played includes Two Princes by the Spin Doctors (as the movie opened), Heaven Is a Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle (as Viagra started taking off, and Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key by Billy Bragg, playing at some point during the film (I can’t remember exactly when – but it was amazing).
