Love and Let Love is a group that aims to increase tolerance and achieve a better world by sharing the message that everyone should love whoever they want. They have done many lip-sync videos, one of which was uploaded about a year ago to Bette Midler’s “Mele Kalikimaka.” I figured since today is Christmas Eve and Tyrell and I are actually currently en route to Hawaii, it was the perfect day to share the video.
According to The Globe and Mail, a teacher on Vancouver Island here in British Columbia was suspended after he recently showed the Christmas video to his Grade 4 students. His intention with showing the video was to raise awareness about sexual diversity and to prompt discussion on transgenderism. The sexy video shows some closeups of a hot guy (and his bulge at one point) at the beach, while other guys are all dressed in drag.
Watch the video below and share your thoughts on the matter in the comments.

I can’t believe that a teacher was suspended over this, I didn’t really see anything wrong with it. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me….?

This is completely asinine! This teacher actually expects us to believe that showing this piece of crap us the only way that he could teach nine year old kids about diversity? I think the message is lost on how dumb the video is. Being that I am a school administrator, I would question the teacher’s effectiveness and overall fitness as an educator.

In my opinion, the video was not used to raise awareness by itself, but to start a discussion about LGBT (and particularly transgender) issues.
The crappy/funny/dumbness nature of the video is actually a good starting point for that discussion start.
I think we should all ask ourselves why noone has questioned, for example, Psy’s Gangman style, where we can also see Psy’s bulge and a lot of girls moving their asses sexually in little clothes. If that teacher had used Psy’s video to raise discussion about positive evolution of human rights in South Korea, would validity of the video have been questioned or the teacher suspended?
I’m sure not.
Let’s call things by its name. Many of us feel uncomfortable only by the thought of 2 men touching each other.

It should be noted that the teacher in question was suspended after one of his pupils went home and complained to his own parents that the teacher was playing the video every day as part of the music curriculum, and he didn’t want to see it any more because it made him uncomfortable. Turns out that the parents were completely unaware of this video up until this point. Bear in mind at the same school when the kids get their sex ed talk, parents are kept fully in the loop as to what their kids will be told – and so have the option to pull their own child out of the class if they want to.
Educating our kids on diversity is fine. It *must* be done with parent involvement however. The fact that this teacher did not have parent involvement, and at least one child in his class felt uncomfortable means he crossed a line.
As it is, it’s my understanding that the teacher has retained his position at the same school, and will be returning to work .
