Lady Gaga delivered a nearly-perfect Super Bowl halftime show that will probably go down in history as one of the best. The only thing that would’ve put it over the “Edge of Glory” is if Beyonce popped up for “Telephone.” I knew she wasn’t scheduled to appear, but I was still hoping that Bey would pull off one of her epic surprises, and show up during that number.
Mother Monster kicked off her show, as previously reported, on top of NRG Stadium. She belted out “God Bless America” as multiple drones flew behind her, creating several formations including the American flag. After that, the 30-year-old singer dove into the stadium a la Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.
Her set list included some of her biggest hits- “Poker Face,” “Born This Way,” “Telephone,” “Just Dance,” “Million Reasons,” and finishing with “Bad Romance.” In between numbers, she performed some pretty acrobatic moves. She capped off her show by dropping the mic and then completing a football pass before jumping into a pit.
While some were expecting (and hoping) Gaga would make a political statement, that never happened. She was reportedly warned by organizers not to do so.
With that being said, there was a theme of inclusion throughout her performance with “This Land Is Your Land” and quoting “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” from the Pledge of Allegiance. Also, for some reason “Born This Way” felt more powerful than any of her previous performances of that song.
