After being relatively quiet for months, you just knew Lady Gaga was going to return with a big bang. Subtle isn’t exactly her middle name. In addition to unveiling yet another ARTPOP promo pic, the 27-year-old singer confirmed the title of her upcoming album’s lead single and debuted its cover art. “Applause” which was co-written with DJ White Shadow is an ode to Gaga’s relationship with her fans.
“In my heart of hearts as I was writing, I knew that if I asked [the fans] to cheer for me before I sang or if I alluded to the fact that they would cheer for me before I sang….They do that all the time for me; before I even open my mouth, the fans start cheering for me, so this exclamation.” – Lady Gaga
Once again, Gaga teamed up with frequent collaborators, photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for her latest photo shoot. Some have noticed the “Applause” cover art resembles David Bowie’s previous covers. If the resemblance is intentional, it wouldn’t be the first time she’s looked to Bowie for inspiration. Her lightning bolt eye makeup during her “Just Dance” phase was definitely an homage to him.
If you’re curious to know what Gaga has in store with the music video for “Applause,” here’s what she revealed about the clip which was filmed last week under the direction of Van Lamsweerde and Matadin from the Haus of Gaga.
“I’ll tell you that it is very fun,” Gaga said. “It’s full of happiness, because what I’m saying in the song essentially is that I live for the applause. I live for the way you cheer and scream for me. Give me that thing that I love. Put your hands up, make them touch.”
Just in case the photos of Gaga wearing an over-sized white ski mask or sitting naked on a chair made of dismantled circuit boards weren’t to your liking, perhaps her new promo pic for ARTPOP will do the trick. Check it out below.
