Kirk Cameron Says Homosexuality Is “Detrimental And Destructive To Society”

Last night, former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron was on Piers Morgan Tonight where he made some extremely ignorant and homophobic comments. The evangelical Christian was asked by Morgan if he thought homosexuality was a sin. “I think that it’s unnatural. I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”

He then went on to share his stance on gay marriage. “I believe marriage was defined by God,” he explained. Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the Garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don’t think anyone else should either. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don’t.”

As you’d expect, GLAAD has already released a statement. “In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. “Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans … with an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections. That’s not ‘redefining’ anything.”

More from GLAAD:

“While Cameron is using his platform to speak out against gay people, his ‘Growing Pains’ co-stars including Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt and Hilary Swank have spoken out for LGBT equality and are enjoying critically successful careers. Joanna Kerns, who played Cameron’s mom on ‘Growing Pains’ also co-starred in the cult hit ‘All Over The Guy’ as the mother of a gay man.

Today’s teen idols are also standing up for equality in America. Aziz Ansari, Chris Colfer, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Dakota Fanning, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Kristen Stewart, and many more have all spoken out in support of LGBT people. Which teen idol who supports LGBT equality is your favorite? Post your thoughts on our blog!”

His thoughts are irrelevant and one sided. How am I supposed to debate with ignorant people?

  • Lou

Let’s not forget this guy’s “proof” that evolution is a myth is a picture he brings to speaking engagements of a creature that he’s never seen: a “crockoduck”. It’s a digitally created picture of an animal that’s half crockodile and half duck. Google it and have a look. His logic is that if evolution were real, we’d be seeing combinations of animals walking around. Nevermind the fact that evolution occurs over thousands of years, not overnight. He’s a loon who believes literally word for word what the bible says. But god help me, he’s the hottest homophobe.

  • Ricky

For someone who hates gay people so much, this guy’s got a serious case of gay face.

  • Joe Snuff

wow, when it said homophoebic comments i thought it was going to say he said “gays are stupid” or something. He has a right to express what he believes just like gay people have a right to express what they believe.

  • Rob

I have found that most, if not all, of the evangelical Christians that I have met in my life are mentally unstable.

  • Oliver

@Ricky: Please, no one needs such an unqualified comment.

@Joe: This is abozt civil rights, not about personal opinions. From opinions like this, it’s only a small step to gay bashing.

  • Nick

First of all i can’t wrap my head around speaking for god how can you say god says this god says that when you don’t know if god excist how can you speak for somebody else he just so arrogant so small minded i think these kind of should be extict

  • Joe Snyder

Kirk Cameron simply stated objective truths. the reason other “stars” support homosexual type folks if for the pocketbook. the gays are so militant and will force compliance by boy cotting etc. GOD says homosexuality is unnatural in Romans chapter 1, just read it. On the other hand its no different than any other sin. We all need cleansing of our sin through the one and only Savior Jesus Christ.

  • Oliver

@Joe: Yes, and The Bible (Deuteronomy 22) says that if a woman is not a virgin on her wedding day, she should be taken to her father’s house and be stoned. And it says that if a child disobeys his/her parents it should be put to death.
Should we really live by these rules?

  • MT

@Joe – And don’t forget Jesus said “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother…he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26). You hate your mom Joe? You better ’cause skydaddy ain’t gonna let no momma lovers into his paradise.

  • The Bible is mostly a work of fiction. It was written by men, not by God, so it’s their opinions and versions of what happened. And that version was written by the same people who write the history books – rich white powerful men. And we all know how well those type of people should be trusted. 😉
