As far as I know, her legal battle with Dr. Luke is still ongoing. The Tennessee case has been dismissed, but the New York one continues. I’m curious what changes have allowed the embattled singer to release, what appears to be, an official single and accompanying visual sanctioned by her label. Halleloo for whatever happened behind the scenes because this is fantastic.
“Praying” finds the 30-year-old singer reflecting on her tumultuous five years away from music and dealing with depression as a result of her battle with her former producer. She co-wrote the track with Ben Abraham, Andrew Joslyn and Ryan Lewis of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis fame. She wrote an equally emotional essay on Lenny Letter explaining the song’s inspiration.
“I have channeled my feelings of severe hopelessness and depression, I’ve overcome obstacles, and I have found strength in myself even when it felt out of reach,” she wrote. “I’ve found what I had thought was an unobtainable place of peace. This song is about coming to feel empathy for someone else even if they hurt you or scare you. It’s a song about learning to be proud of the person you are even during low moments when you feel alone. It’s also about hoping everyone, even someone who hurt you, can heal.” – via Lenny Letter
“Praying” isn’t just a one-off single, but rather the lead cut for her new album, Rainbow. It marks the singer’s first new LP since Warrior released back in 2012. Check out the “Praying” music video below directed by Jonas Åkerlund.
